Self-care isn’t selfish

This #InternationalSelfCareDay, we urge you not to forget to take care of the most important person in your life—yourself. Self-care isn’t just a trendy buzzword; it’s a crucial practice for maintaining mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing. By dedicating time to self-care, you can recharge, reduce stress, and improve your overall quality of life. In this blog, we’re providing some tips on how you can easily incorporate self-care into your daily routine and encourage your friends to join you.

Why self-care is essential

Taking time out for yourself is far from selfish. We all need time to recharge and look after number one. Without making time to do the things that bring you joy, you’ll soon find yourself losing your spark. Here’s just a few reasons why self-care shouldn’t be overlooked:

Reduces stress: Engaging in self-care activities helps lower cortisol levels, the body’s primary stress hormone, leading to a more relaxed and focused state of mind.

Boosts mental health: Regular self-care can help combat anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues by promoting positive thinking and relaxation.

Improves physical health: Taking care of yourself by doing regular exercise, fuelling your body properly and getting adequate sleep all contribute to better physical health, reducing the risk of chronic illnesses.

Enhances productivity: Taking breaks from tasks to prioritise yourself can lead to increased productivity and creativity, as your mind is better rested and more focused.

Slotting self-care into your life

We understand that life is fast moving and extremely busy. So finding spare time in each day may seem like an impossible task for some. If you’re struggling to weave self-care into your life, or aren’t sure where to start, try starting with one of the following:

Stay active: Physical activity is a great way to relieve stress and improve mood. Whether it’s a yoga class, a gym session, or a weekend hike, find an activity you enjoy and stick with it. Even something as simple as taking the stairs instead of the escalator counts – Get those endorphins flowing!

Prioritise sleep: Try and aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. Create a relaxing bedtime routine by avoiding screens before bed and ensuring your sleeping environment is comfortable and calming. Instead of watching tv or scrolling on your phone, read a chapter of that book you’ve been meaning to start. You’ll feel much fresher in the morning which will have a positive effect on the rest of your day.

Healthy eating: Nourish your body with a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Fast food tastes great but it often leaves us feeling unsatisfied and sluggish. Aim for your five a day and you should start to see an increase in your energy levels, among other things.

Begin with simple acts and take just a few minutes each day, even if all you get time for us enjoying a cup of tea in peace. These small moments can have a big impact on your wellbeing.

Spread the news

Self-care is not selfish – Pass it on! Self-care is even more enjoyable when shared with friends. Ring your Grandparents, arrange a lunch with your colleagues, pop round and visit a friend. Not only will it make you feel amazing, but you’ll also give them a boost too.

There are lots of ways you can include someone else in your own self-care activities, such as organising a relaxing spa day with friends at a local spa, or creating a DIY spa experience at home. If spas aren’t your thing, arrange meet ups for activities you’ve been dying to try, like paining. padel or an escape room. These gatherings can be a great way to relax and take a step back.

We strongly believe that staying active is more fun with a friend. Whether it’s a morning run, a group exercise class or a swim, exercising together can provide you both with some much-needed time to prioritise yourself and get your body moving. No gym membership? No problem. Explore nature by organising hikes or bike rides. Fresh air and good company can do wonders for your mood and energy levels.

Make self-care a priority

Self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. By prioritising yourself and encouraging your friends to do the same, you can create a supportive community that values wellbeing. Remember, taking care of yourself enables you to better care for others and handle life’s challenges.
