The secret to living well

Movement is one of the most powerful tools we have to improve our physical and mental wellbeing. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a swim in your local pool, or joining a group class, movement has the ability to transform lives. At Life Leisure, we take it one step further. We believe movement isn’t just about ‘fitness’—it’s about living well and creating a healthier, happier life for everyone in our community.

Why movement matters

Staying active goes beyond burning calories or getting fit. Movement supports every aspect of our wellbeing, from reducing the risk of long-term health issues to improving our mood and energy levels. Here’s why movement is so essential:

Engaging in regular physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. It improves mobility, builds strength, and enhances heart and lung function, making everyday tasks easier. For older adults, low-impact exercises like walking or swimming are especially beneficial, helping to maintain independence by improving balance and flexibility.

Movement is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. Exercise releases endorphins—those “happy hormones” that lift your mood and boost energy levels. Whether it’s a brisk walk or a group class, physical activity can clear your mind, reduce tension, and provide a more positive outlook on life.

Living an active lifestyle makes everyday activities—like climbing stairs, playing with kids, or carrying shopping—easier and more enjoyable. Incorporating movement into your routine isn’t just about exercise; it’s about building the strength and endurance needed for life’s daily demands.

Physical activity also has the power to bring people together. Whether you’re walking with friends, swimming with family, or attending a community sports session, it provides opportunities for connection and strengthens relationships. Being active in a social setting helps us feel supported and reduces feelings of isolation, creating a stronger sense of belonging.

Making movement accessible for all

At Life Leisure, we know that everyone’s interests, abilities and schedules are different. Not everyone enjoys the gym—and that’s okay! Movement comes in all shapes and sizes, and it should be something everyone can access, regardless of age, fitness level, or background.

Here are simple ways to make movement part of your life:

1. Walking

Walking is free, easy to start, and one of the most underrated forms of exercise. It’s a low-impact, stress-reducing activity suitable for all ages. Whether it’s a short walk on your lunch break or a longer stroll with friends, every step counts!

Join us: Life Leisure run free monthly wellness walks on the first Saturday of every month. Meet like-minded people, explore local routes, and enjoy the mental health benefits of walking together. We’re also hosting a more challenging walk, taking on the Mellor Cross route on Sunday 26th January. For information on our wellness walks and to get involved, please email lisa.arrandale@lifeleisure.net.

2. Swimming

Swimming is one of the best full-body, low-impact exercises. It’s perfect for anyone with joint pain, mobility issues, or those looking for a refreshing way to get active. Aqua aerobics classes also provide a fun and social way to move!

Tip: Don’t worry if you’re a beginner. Life Leisure pools offer swimming sessions for all abilities. We recommend starting off in a general swim for a more informal dip if you’re feeling nervous. We also offer swimming lessons for all ages. Learning to swim is not just for children! Find your nearest pool here: https://www.lifeleisure.net/centres/

3. Start small

If you’re new to movement or are finding it overwhelming trying to make time, start small. Take the stairs instead of the lift, start of your day with some gentle stretching, or try a short 10-minute walk on your lunch break. Building movement into your day doesn’t need to be stressful—it’s about progress, not perfection.

4. Find your why

Movement is personal and finding your “why” can keep you motivated. Do you want to feel stronger? Improve your mental health? Spend more time with family? Discover an activity you love and build it into your lifestyle.

Movement for mental health

With mental health issues on the rise, movement has never been more important. The good news is, you don’t need to do high-intensity workouts to feel the benefits. Activities like walking, swimming, and holistic classes can reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and help you feel more balanced. At Life Leisure, we promote movement not just as exercise but as an essential part of overall wellbeing.

We’re here to help you find ways to move that work for you. Whether it’s taking your first steps with a walking group, signing up for personal training, or finding a love for the water, we believe movement should be fun, accessible, and something to look forward to.
