The Community Sensory Garden at the Life Leisure wellbeing hub in Hazel Grove was officially opened on Wednesday, January 22, with local community members among the first to explore the new space. Funded by the UKSPF, the garden is designed to engage the senses through touch, smell, sound, and sight, offering therapeutic benefits in a safe, inclusive environment for all.
Hannah Bowler, Active Communities Children and Young People Manager at Life Leisure, explained, “At Life Leisure, we’re passionate about creating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to lead active, fulfilling lives. This garden offers a versatile, beautiful space for relaxation, exploration, and connection.”
The sensory garden is not just a collection of plants and flowers; it’s a space for connection with nature, others, and oneself. Research shows spending time outdoors reduces stress, enhances mental wellbeing, and promotes physical health through activities like gardening and gentle exercise. For individuals with additional needs, sensory gardens offer an inclusive environment that supports various needs, improving focus and reducing anxiety.
The garden will host a variety of activities, including family workshops, kids’ fun days, summer fairs, outdoor markets, gardening clubs, coffee mornings, and sensory-focused workshops. It aligns with Stockport Council’s ‘Stockport Moves’ and ‘Stockport Makes’ initiatives, encouraging residents to become more active and connect with nature.
In addition to promoting wellbeing, the garden will contribute to a greener environment, improving air quality, supporting biodiversity, and attracting pollinators. For more information about Life Leisure, visit www.lifeleisure.net.
