Riding the Wave of Excitement: Celebrating the Tour of Britain Race

On Sunday 3rd September, the 2023 Tour of Britain Cycling race takes place. Day one is all around Greater Manchester and the sprint section will pass right in front of Life Leisure Hazel Grove!

Cycling is a timeless activity that transcends age, fitness level, and preference. The allure of the open road and the convenience of indoor setups make cycling a popular form of exercise for many.

The Tour of Britain race not only showcases the remarkable athleticism of professional cyclists but also promotes a culture of health, fitness, and camaraderie. Join us as we dive into the world of cycling and celebrate the spirit of the Tour of Britain race by unpicking the attraction and benefits of both indoor and outdoor cycling.

Outdoor cycling: Embracing nature’s playground:

1. Connection with nature

Venturing into the great outdoors on two wheels allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature. The open road or winding trail becomes your pathway to explore breathtaking landscapes, from rolling hills to serene waterfronts. The sensory experience of feeling the wind, hearing the sounds, and witnessing nature’s beauty unfolds as you pedal along.

2. Vitamin-D and mood boost

Outdoor cycling exposes you to natural sunlight, providing a much-needed dose of vitamin-D. This essential nutrient promotes bone health, strengthens the immune system, and plays a pivotal role in uplifting mood. The combination of physical activity and sunlight can leave you feeling revitalised and joyful.

3. Varied terrain and adventure

Outdoor cycling offers an ever-changing terrain that challenges your skills and boosts your endurance. From uphill climbs to exhilarating descents, every ride promises adventure. The sense of accomplishment you derive from conquering new routes fuels your passion and keeps you coming back for more!

Indoor cycling: Fitness unleashed, rain or shine:

1. Weather-proof workouts

Indoor cycling offers a consistent workout environment regardless of the weather. Rain or shine, you can engage in a dedicated cycling routine without interruptions. This is particularly valuable during the colder, wetter months!

2. Customised workouts

Indoor cycling empowers you to tailor your workouts to your fitness goals. With adjustable resistance levels and structured training programs, you have the flexibility to focus on building strength, increasing endurance, or even incorporating interval training.

Our brand-new iFit bikes at Life Leisure Romiley have thousands of workouts available for you to take advantage of at the touch of a button! Explore destinations worldwide with expert trainers all while keeping warm and dry. These fantastic new bikes will also be available to use in the gym at Life Leisure Hazel Grove from Monday 4th September.

3. Accessibility and convenience

Although there are many picturesque cycling routes in Stockport, some people may have to travel a short distance to reach these routes. This is where indoor cycling provides a convenient alternative. Indoor cycling setups are easily accessible, allowing you to engage in high-quality workouts from the comfort of your nearby gym – or even your own home!

Shared benefits: Well-being on two wheels:

1. Cardiovascular health

Both indoor and outdoor cycling deliver exceptional cardiovascular benefits. Regular cycling improves heart health by enhancing circulation, lowering blood pressure, and promoting efficient oxygen utilisation. Your heart becomes stronger, and your overall cardiovascular fitness soars.

2. Weight management and calorie burn

Cycling, regardless of the setting, is an effective calorie-burning activity that can aid in weight management alongside a balanced diet. Whether you’re exploring new terrains or following a guided indoor class, the pedal strokes contribute to calorie expenditure and fat loss.

3. Stress relief and mental clarity

Cycling can act as a stress-reliever, releasing endorphins that alleviate anxiety and enhance your overall mood. The rhythmic motion of pedalling, combined with the sensory experiences of outdoor landscapes or virtual environments, promotes mental clarity and a sense of well-being.

Ultimately, the decision to engage in indoor or outdoor cycling hinges on personal preference, circumstances, and goals. Both styles of cycling offer an array of physical, mental, and emotional benefits that contribute to a healthier, happier you. Whether you’re basking in the serenity of nature or pushing your limits in the controlled environment of your home, cycling remains an exceptional way to nurture your well-being while indulging in the exhilaration of the ride. So, whichever path you choose, remember to embrace the journey, and savour the incredible benefits that cycling brings to your life.

To show our support for the Tour of Britain, we’ll be hosting a fun day at our Hazel Grove hub from 11.30am – 1.30pm. Make sure to pop down with family and friends to have a look around the stalls, join in our spin bike challenges, enjoy light refreshments and more!
