Who is Masters for?

Masters Swimming at Stockport Metro is for everyone 18+, whatever your background or ability.

Coming back to the pool after competing? Training for an Ironman or triathlon? Learning to swim with confidence later in life? Or just want to stay fit, mobile, and feeling good? You’ll fit right in.

We’ve got swimmers of all levels, including those competing nationally and internationally and a friendly, supportive vibe to match.

If you can comfortably swim 25–50 metres with decent technique (no stopping) and are confident in a lane, you’re good to go. Join us, build your skills, and enjoy the water with experienced coaches who’ve got your back.

Do I have to be a competitive swimmer?

Nope, you don’t need to be a competitive swimmer to join us.

All we ask is that you’re a competent swimmer and comfortable in the water. From there, it’s all about you. Our programme is built around personal progress, not pressure, so there’s zero expectation to compete.

Whether you’re here for fitness, confidence, or chasing goals in the pool, you set the pace.

What is Masters swimming?

Masters swimming is structured training for adults, but with a relaxed, welcoming feel.

You’ll work on technique, build endurance and strength, and boost your confidence in the water. Every session is designed to help you improve, whatever your starting point.

Our coaches keep things friendly, supportive, and inclusive, perfect if you’re new to structured sessions or making a comeback after time away.

How intense are the sessions?

Sessions are designed to challenge you, in a good way, both physically and mentally, while still being accessible for all levels.

Everything’s adaptable, so you can train at a pace and volume that works for you. As a rough guide, most swimmers cover around 1.8–3km per hour, but there’s plenty of flexibility either way.

Each session mixes technique work, endurance, and some tougher efforts, all geared towards helping you improve steadily and feel great in the water.

Do I have to compete if I join?

Totally optional.

If you do fancy it, our coaches, both with national-level experience, have got your back. Whether it’s Masters events, triathlons, Ironman, or your own personal challenge, we’ll help you go for it.

Not into competing? No problem at all. You’ll still get fitter, sharpen your technique, and enjoy great sessions with a supportive, like-minded group.

“I joined the Masters programme because I came to swimming quite late in life. I was taught by my parents, so I could swim, but not very well. I decided I wanted to get better, so I looked around and found this Masters programme at Life Leisure. I got in touch, they were really friendly and welcoming, and I’ve found that by coming to these sessions I’ve made friends, been inspired and seen my technique and enjoyment for swimming skyrocket.”

“The coaches are great, they’re friends with us really. They’re both fantastic swimmers with loads of experience. Every session is different; they keep us motivated, and there’s no way I’d do half the stuff I do in these sessions if they weren’t there to motivate us.”

“There are loads of different abilities here, and everyone’s really friendly. It’s kind of a community; we do things outside of swimming as well, like social events. We’re just a really nice gang of people.”

“I get quite a lot from swimming. It’s definitely improved my confidence, it’s improved my fitness, which has translated across the other sports that I like to do. I’ve also got into open water swimming and other sporting events, so it’s opened lots of doors for me.”
