A guide to overcoming gym anxiety

Stepping into the gym can be an intimidating experience, especially if you’re new to the scene. But fear not! Overcoming gym anxiety is a journey that many have successfully navigated – and you can too! Let’s explore some tips to help you conquer those initial fears and help make the gym a place of tranquillity.

Start small
Don’t jump in the deep end, begin with simple exercises and gradually increase intensity. Building confidence through small achievements is key to overcoming anxiety.

Bring a buddy
Having a workout partner can provide comfort and motivation. Together, you can navigate the gym environment, making the experience more enjoyable. Grab a friend who also wants to work on their health and wellbeing and embark on the journey together.

Have a plan
Map out your workout routine in advance. Knowing exactly what you need to do will keep you focused and less anxious about what others might think. If you’re struggling on which exercises to choose, ask a friend, family member or a member of staff at the gym for help – that’s what they’re there for! Life Leisure offer a free Inspire programme for all new members, providing a personalised training programme and expert advice.

Comfort is key
Wearing comfortable workout gear not only enhances your performance but also boosts confidence. When you feel good, gym anxiety tends to take a back seat. Don’t worry about what others may or may not be wearing. Choose gym clothes that you feel comfortable in – this includes a good sturdy pair of trainers that you can rely on to not give you blisters part way through your workout!

Focus on yourself
Remember that everyone is at the gym for their own personal growth. Don’t let the perceived judgment of others hinder your progress – stay focused on your own journey.

Consider group classes
Group classes can provide a sense of community and friendship. You’ll be surrounded by individuals with similar goals, making the gym a more supportive environment.

Taking the step to begin your health and wellbeing journey and overcoming gym anxiety is a significant step toward a healthier lifestyle. By starting small, finding support, and focusing on your own progress, you can turn the gym from a source of anxiety into a space of growth and achievement. Don’t sweat it, you’ve got this!
