Hiking is always increasingly popular in the warmer months, and with the growth of TikTok, many more people are discovering scenic routes they’d like to venture on. If you’re new to hiking or considering lacing up your boots for the first time, this guide will help you get started on the right foot.
Building your distance and endurance safely
Starting out on a hiking journey involves gradually increasing both your distance and endurance to avoid injury and ensure an enjoyable experience. Here are some tips:
- Start slow: Begin with short hikes on easy trails to acclimate your body to walking on uneven terrain.
- Increase gradually: Gradually increase the length and difficulty of your hikes as your fitness improves. Aim to add no more than 10% to your total distance each time.
- Stay hydrated and well-fuelled: Bring plenty of water and snacks to maintain energy levels during longer hikes.
- Listen to your body: Pay attention to how you feel during and after hikes. Rest when needed and don’t push yourself too hard.
Finding local walking routes
Finding local hiking trails is easier than you might think. Websites and apps like AllTrails and Komoot often provide detailed information on nearby trails, including difficulty ratings and user reviews. As mentioned before, TikTok is now a fantastic resource to use when it comes to finding recommendations and is also free to access. If you prefer to go old school, local guidebooks or hiking maps and some outdoor stores can also provide recommendations for nearby hiking routes.
Hiking essentials
Before you set out on your hiking adventure, having the right gear can make all the difference in your comfort and enjoyment. Here are some key items to consider:
Footwear:
Choosing the right hiking shoes or boots is crucial for a comfortable and safe hike. The sort of hikes you want to venture on will depend what sort of footwear is best for your needs. Trail shoes are ideal for lighter hikes on well-maintained trails. They are lightweight, flexible, and offer good traction. Hiking boots are designed for more rugged terrain and longer hikes. They provide ankle support, stability, and protection against rocks and roots.
Make sure your footwear fits properly with enough room for your toes to wiggle, but not too loose that your feet slide around. Try to wear your new shoes or boots around the house and on shorter walks before hitting the trail to prevent blisters and discomfort.
Clothing:
If you’re heading up a mountain, it can be cooler at the summit, so dress in layers to adjust to changing weather conditions. A moisture-wicking base layer, insulating mid-layer, and waterproof outer layer (jacket and pants) are all items to consider.
Backpack:
A small backpack is usually sufficient for day hikes to carry essentials like water, snacks, a first aid kit, and extra layers. Look for a pack with padded shoulder straps and a hip belt to distribute weight evenly and reduce strain on your back.
Other essentials:
Other items you may want to consider based on the hike are:
- Navigation: Carry a map and compass or use a GPS device or smartphone app with offline maps.
- Sun protection: Pack suncream, sunglasses, and a hat to shield yourself from the sun during the Summer months.
- First aid kit: Include basic supplies like plasters, antiseptic wipes, pain killers, and any personal medications you may need such as an inhaler.
If you’re unsure on which brands to go for or what you actually need, visit a specialised outdoor store where knowledgeable staff can help you find the right gear for your needs. You could also consider buying pre-loved items if you’re looking for a budget friendly option. As long as you’re comfortable and well-prepped for your hike, there’s no need to break the bank.
