Stockport-born Liz puts Type 2 Diabetes into remission through exercise referral scheme

A Life Leisure member from Stockport is celebrating a life-changing health transformation after putting her Type 2 diabetes into remission through regular exercise and improved nutrition.

Over the past year, Elizabeth Slater has transformed her wellbeing by committing to regular physical activity and making positive lifestyle changes, showing how small commitments can lead to powerful long-term results.

Reflecting on how her journey began, Elizabeth said:

“What started as a nervous first step through the doors of my local Life Leisure hub has grown into a genuine love of movement, improved health, renewed confidence and a completely different relationship with my body.

At the beginning, exercise felt daunting. I joined the exercise referral scheme (PARiS), and week by week I began to feel stronger, more capable and, most importantly, proud of myself for showing up.”

With regular gym sessions, Aqua Aerobics classes and a structured approach to nutrition, Elizabeth gradually began to feel the benefits both physically and mentally.

“Alongside exercise, I introduced a structured nutrition plan that transformed how I felt day to day. The constant tiredness I had accepted as ‘normal’ lifted. Bloating reduced significantly, my energy levels improved, cravings became manageable, and the scales began to move in the right direction. The combination of consistent movement and the right nutritional support has been the real game changer.”

Over the course of 12 months, Elizabeth lost 3.5 stone and achieved a major health milestone, with her Type 2 diabetes now in remission. Her story highlights the important role that regular physical activity plays in supporting long-term health.

While medication remains an important option for many people, Elizabeth’s experience shows how exercise and nutrition can also make a significant difference when supported appropriately.

Elizabeth was supported through Life Leisure’s PARiS scheme by her coach, Colette, who has worked closely with her throughout her journey.

Colette said:

“Liz’s confidence has grown enormously, and she’s taken on challenges she once thought impossible. It’s been a privilege to support her journey and see the positive impact these changes have had on her life.”

One of Elizabeth’s proudest achievements was completing the Stand Up To Cancer challenge in November 2025, committing to daily exercise for the entire month, which is something she once thought impossible.

Now focused on maintaining her progress, Elizabeth sees exercise as a long-term investment in her future.

Elizabeth hopes her story will inspire others who may feel unsure about taking their first step.

Life Leisure continues to support members like Elizabeth through inclusive facilities, expert guidance and programmes such as PARiS, designed to help people of all ages and abilities improve their health and wellbeing.
