For Kingsley, General Manager at Life Leisure Houldsworth Village, Movember has become about much more than growing a moustache. It’s about raising awareness of men’s health, breaking down barriers and encouraging people to look out for one another.
This November marks Kingsley’s 10th year taking part in the annual Movember challenge, which shines a spotlight on men’s health, including mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
What started with his rugby team at Heaton Moor has grown into a decade-long commitment to a cause he believes is just as important today as it was when he first got involved.
“I wanted to do my bit,” Kingsley explains. “It’s a great way to raise awareness of men’s health while doing something a little different. It’s a cause that affects so many people.”
More than just a moustache
Over the past 10 years, Kingsley has raised an impressive £2,920 through his Movember efforts, with support growing particularly strongly in recent years.
But while fundraising is a big part of the challenge, it’s the conversations it creates that have left a lasting impression.
For Kingsley, growing a moustache has proved to be a surprisingly effective conversation starter, prompting chats with friends, colleagues and even strangers when he’s out and about. On occasion, those conversations have even led to sharing a drink and receiving donations on the spot.
More importantly, they’ve reinforced why he keeps coming back each year.
“One of the biggest things I’ve taken away from taking part is how important it is to start conversations. Movember helps break down some of those barriers,” he says.
“Checking in with a mate or encouraging someone to seek support can mean more than any of us realise.”
Keeping the conversation going
Men’s health remains a cause close to Kingsley’s heart, and he hopes his continued involvement will encourage more people to talk openly and check in with the people around them.
Whether it’s asking a friend how they’re really doing, making time for a conversation or encouraging someone to seek help, small actions can make a meaningful difference.
This year, Kingsley has set himself a fundraising target of £500 and is inviting others to support his 10th Movember challenge.
“Every donation and bit of support is greatly appreciated,” he says.
