How to become a walk leader in your community

Walking is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to improve physical health, mental wellbeing, and social connection. At Life Leisure, our community walks are led by passionate members of the public who share our mission to help others move more, feel better, and connect with their local area.

If you’ve ever thought about giving something back to your community, becoming a walk leader could be the perfect next step.

What is a walk leader?

A walk leader is someone who helps organise and guide group walks within the community. You don’t need to be a fitness professional or an expert walker. Just confident, friendly, and willing to support others.

Walk leaders help by:

  • Choosing safe and accessible walking routes
  • Welcoming and supporting participants
  • Keeping the group together at a comfortable pace
  • Encouraging conversation and connection along the way

It’s a simple role that makes a big difference.

Why become a walk leader?

Becoming a walk leader is about more than just walking. It’s about building confidence, meeting new people, and helping others take positive steps toward better health.

You’ll help reduce isolation in your community, support others to become more active, improve your own wellbeing and daily routine, and be part of a growing movement that makes physical activity more accessible for everyone.

We already have a growing network of community walks led by members of the public. These walks are relaxed, social, and open to all abilities.

They typically include:

  • Short, gentle local walks
  • Social pace groups where conversation is encouraged
  • Routes through parks, green spaces, and local neighbourhoods
  • Opportunities to meet new people and stay active together

These walks are a great example of how everyday people can lead positive change in their communities.
