Putting the sport in Stockport

Summer is officially here, and with longer days, warmer weather and the school holidays just around the corner, there’s never been a better time to get outside and moving.

That’s why this summer, we’re inviting the people of Stockport to do one simple thing: find your sport.

Whether you’re looking to get back into exercise, keep the kids active over the holidays, try something new with friends, or simply discover what’s available in your local area, there’s more sport on your doorstep than you might think.

What sports are there in Stockport?

Sport doesn’t have to mean committing to a marathon, joining a competitive team or spending hours in the gym.

Sometimes, it’s as simple as:

  • Trying badminton for the first time
  • Joining a family swim session
  • Booking onto a fitness class
  • Going for a run
  • Discovering a new sport you didn’t know you’d enjoy

There are eight hubs in Stockport waiting for you to dive in and try something new.

So whether you’re eight or eighty, a total beginner or someone getting back into movement after a break, there’s something here for you.

Let’s break it down:

  1. Racquet sports

Fast-paced, social and easy to pick up, racquet sports are a brilliant way to get moving this summer, combining fun, fitness and a little friendly competition. Great for all ages and abilities, they’re a chance to play, laugh and maybe discover a new favourite along the way.

Try Badminton, Padel, Pickleball, Tennis and Table Tennis at various locations in Stockport.

    1. Ball sports

Practice your skills or simply have a kickabout with friends. Ball sports are all about movement, energy and connection.

There’s loads for children to do when it comes to typical ball sports, and they can make new friends while they’re at it. Coming along to a ball sports session a few times over summer might just give them the confidence they need to join a sports team at school in September.

Bring friends along to play Football at Stockport Sports Village or Brinnington Park.

If you need a gentler, more social start to the sport, look for Walking Football.

    1. Gym-based sports

Gym-based sport can be whatever you want it to be. It might mean lifting weights, building strength, joining a class, training for an event or simply finding time to move in a way that feels good.

We have eight gyms across Stockport, including two HYROX 365 clubs where you can train for your next race, or just see what the hype is all about.

    1. Water-based sports

There’s nothing quite like being in the water. Swimming is refreshing, energising and suitable for every age and ability. Swim lengths, splash with the family, dance and laugh, learn a new skill or build confidence in the water. From fun to fitness, water offers a different way to move.

We have five pools across Stockport. Dive in and give it a go. (Look out for Aqua if you want a workout that’s super fun!)

    Affordable sports in Stockport

You don’t need to travel far or spend lots of money to get active this summer.

Pay-as-you-go options mean you can trial activities without pressure and find the one that works best for you.

A badminton court for one hour between four friends works out at less than £4.00 each*. That’s around the same price as your daily coffee run or meal deal, and we guarantee it will make you feel 10x better.

There’s also something so important about the mental shift when it comes to viewing your health and happiness as an investment and something worth spending money on from time to time. We’re all so keen to spend money on material items, so why do we hesitate when it’s for our health and wellbeing?

    Why so serious?

Not every activity needs to be serious and competitive. Sometimes sport is simply about having fun, trying something different and enjoying how movement makes you feel.

Moving your body and playing a sport with others has the power to boost your energy, improve your mood, reduce stress and help you feel more connected to your local community.

    Schools out for summer

Over July and August, keeping children entertained can feel like a full-time job.

Our junior and family activities are designed to help you stay active without breaking the bank, giving parents accessible, low-cost ways to keep children busy, social and moving.

Whether it’s swimming, family gym sessions, junior sessions or sports games, there are plenty of opportunities to make movement part of your family’s summer routine.

Less screen time, more playtime, and more summer memories made together.

Stockport is full of opportunities to get active. You just need to know where to look.
